I see a recurring pattern in engineering teams. An engineer evaluates Cursor for two weeks. Then Cline for two weeks. Then Aider, Windsurf, Continue, Codeium. By the time they’ve tried everything, they’ve been using AI tools for three months but haven’t gotten good at any of them.

The evaluation never ends. The fluency never starts.

The marginal differences are smaller than they look

When you read about AI coding tools, every comparison emphasizes differences. Cursor has Composer; Cline has agent mode; Aider has architect mode. The marketing says these are categorically different products.

In practice, the categorical differences are smaller than the marketing suggests. All these tools:

  • Read code, suggest changes, apply diffs
  • Connect to multiple model providers
  • Have some flavor of agent or autonomous loop
  • Support some form of context loading
  • Have similar pricing

The differentiators are real but bounded. Cursor’s Composer is genuinely better than Cline’s plan/act for some tasks; Cline’s MCP support is genuinely better than Cursor’s tooling for others. Each tool has 1-3 differentiators that matter.

But the bulk of what makes you productive — the speed of accept/reject cycles, the quality of suggestions, the integration with your editor patterns — is similar across the top tools.

Where productivity actually comes from

After watching engineers adopt these tools, the productivity gain comes from specific things:

Knowing the tool’s failure modes. When the AI is wrong, in what specific ways is it wrong for your stack? Knowing this lets you correct fast instead of getting confused.

Knowing the right size of task. What’s the size of task that fits the tool well? Too small and you should just type; too big and the AI gets lost. Each tool has its own sweet spot.

Knowing the right framing. What language gets the best output from this tool? Not magic phrases — practical framings that match how the tool wants to be asked.

Building rules and config. A .cursorrules file, .clinerules, or CLAUDE.md that captures your project’s specifics. This takes weeks to converge on; switching tools resets it.

Editor muscle memory. The keybindings, the panels, the workflows. Switching editor-based tools means relearning. The hours add up.

None of these come from evaluating tools. They come from using one tool deeply.

The engineer who actually outperformed

Six months ago I was at a small team where one engineer was producing meaningfully more output than peers. Same projects, same domains, same starting talent.

I asked what tool he was using. The answer: he’d been using Cursor for 14 months. Just Cursor. He hadn’t tried Cline, hadn’t tried Aider, didn’t know what Composer’s competitors were called.

He’d built up a .cursorrules file that was 200 lines of project-specific guidance. He’d developed a sense of when to use Tab vs. Cmd+K vs. chat. He had keybindings he’d customized over time. He’d internalized when Cursor was wrong and had a habit of catching those cases.

His advantage wasn’t the tool. Cursor isn’t categorically better than Cline. His advantage was 14 months of accumulated fluency in a specific tool.

The engineers spending two weeks per tool were comparing tools at 5% mastery. He was using Cursor at 80% mastery. The 5%-vs-80% gap dwarfed any differentiator between Cursor and other tools.

The evaluation trap

The evaluation trap is real. Engineers feel like they’re being responsible — “I’m finding the best tool for me.” The pattern feels productive.

What’s actually happening: they’re spending the precious early-adoption period rebuilding muscle memory every two weeks. The compounding never starts.

If you’ve been using AI tools for six months and still describe yourself as “evaluating,” you’re losing time you’ll never get back.

The right tool selection process

A more productive approach:

  1. Pick one tool, almost arbitrarily. Cursor, Cline, Aider — whichever you’ve heard of most. Don’t agonize.
  2. Use it exclusively for three months.
  3. Build the rules file, learn the keybindings, internalize the failure modes.
  4. After three months, you’ve earned the right to switch if there’s a specific complaint that’s structural.

The “almost arbitrarily” part is the unconventional advice. Engineers don’t want to hear it because it feels irresponsible. But the cost of an arbitrary first pick is bounded; the cost of indefinite evaluation is unbounded.

When to actually switch

Specific signals that switching has a real basis:

  • A specific feature you need that your tool doesn’t have and won’t get
  • A specific failure mode that’s causing measurable cost
  • A specific stack-language combination where your tool’s coverage is bad

These are real reasons to switch. They’re rare relative to the frequency of casual evaluation.

When to not switch:

  • New tool just shipped, has buzz
  • Coworker mentioned they switched
  • The marketing for tool X sounds compelling
  • You’re frustrated with a specific failure that any tool would have

These are the signals that lead to evaluation churn. Resist them.

The investment view

Time spent learning a tool is an investment. Like any investment, it requires a holding period to pay off. Liquidating early — switching to another tool — destroys the accumulated value.

For most users:

  • 1 week of using a tool: still in the steep learning curve, output is suboptimal
  • 1 month: basic fluency, output approaching the tool’s potential
  • 3 months: deep fluency, gaining the differentiated value
  • 1 year: expert fluency, getting the maximum value

The differentiated value of a specific tool only emerges past the 3-month mark. Below that, you’re using all tools at roughly the same level — the level of a beginner.

What I’d recommend

For someone starting AI tool adoption:

Pick whichever tool your team uses, or whichever one looks most like what you already use. The familiarity helps. The specific tool matters less than the early-adoption fluency.

Commit to it for at least a quarter. No switching during that period. If something doesn’t work, figure out how to make it work, not how to change tools.

Invest in the configuration. Rules files, keybindings, workflow patterns. These are where the productivity comes from.

Re-evaluate annually. Once a year, look at what’s emerged. Switch if there’s a real reason. Stay otherwise.

The pattern produces engineers who are genuinely productive with AI tools. The alternative — endless evaluation — produces engineers who are still beginners after a year.

Closing thought

There’s no “best” AI tool in any meaningful sense. There are several good tools that serve overlapping use cases with marginal differentiation. The variable that matters most for your productivity is how deeply you’ve adopted a tool, not which tool you’ve adopted.

Pick. Commit. Get good. The marginal differences will surface in time, and you’ll know whether they matter for your work. Until then, switching tools every two weeks ensures you stay below the productivity curve forever.
