How to write Cursor prompts that actually work

The single biggest reason Cursor produces mediocre results is not the model — it’s the prompt. A vague instruction like “refactor this function” leaves the model guessing about scope, constraints, and your actual goal. The output is technically valid code that doesn’t do what you wanted.
This guide covers the habits that make a real difference, based on several months of using Cursor on production TypeScript and Python codebases.
Start with the why, not the what
Bad prompt:
Refactor this function
Better prompt:
This function is called 200 times per second in prod and is currently the hot path in our profiler.
Refactor it to avoid the object allocation on line 12 without changing the public interface.
The model doesn’t know what “refactor” means to you. It might add types, extract helpers, rename variables, or rewrite the whole thing. Telling it why you’re changing something constrains the solution space dramatically.
Tell Cursor what not to touch
If you’re working in a file with shared utilities, say so explicitly:
Rewrite the `parseConfig` function below. Do not touch `defaultConfig` or `validateSchema` — those are tested separately and I don't want to break existing snapshots.
Cursor reads your whole file for context, but it doesn’t know which parts are load-bearing without you saying so.
Reference the right files in context
Cursor’s @ syntax is the most underused feature for beginners. Before you write a prompt, pull in the files that define the types, schemas, or interfaces your code needs to conform to:
@src/types/user.ts @src/lib/db.ts
Add a `getUserByEmail` function to the db module. It should return `User | null` and use the existing `query` helper.
Without those references, Cursor will either hallucinate your type definitions or make them up from scratch.
Give it a failing test first
If you already have a failing test, paste it into the prompt:
This test is failing:
Expected: { id: 1, name: 'Alice' }
Received: { id: 1, name: null }
Fix the `getName` method so the test passes. The issue is somewhere in how we join the profile table.
A failing test is an exact specification. It removes all ambiguity about what success looks like.
Constrain output length
Cursor has a tendency to over-explain changes, especially in the chat panel. If you want a concise output:
Rewrite this in idiomatic Go. Return only the updated function — no explanation, no markdown fences.
The “no explanation” instruction alone cuts response time in half and keeps the diff easy to review.
Use Cmd+K for local, Chat for cross-file
Cmd+K (inline edit) is best for single-function changes where you’re pointing directly at the code. The Chat panel is better when you need the model to reason across multiple files or propose a design first.
Mixing these up is a common source of frustration. If you’re using Chat and pasting large code blocks for a single-function change, switch to Cmd+K.
When it goes sideways: reset before retrying
If Cursor generates something wrong, don’t just say “that’s wrong, try again.” The model will anchor on its previous response and make incremental changes rather than starting fresh.
Instead:
- Reject the change (Cmd+Z or close the diff)
- Rewrite your prompt with more constraints
- Submit a fresh request
A fresh prompt with better constraints produces better results than a conversation trying to correct a bad first draft.
The prompts that consistently work
After months of use, the patterns that work reliably:
- Scope limiter: “Only change X, leave Y alone”
- Interface constraint: “The public API must stay the same”
- Test anchor: “This test must pass: [paste test]”
- Performance constraint: “This runs in a hot loop — no allocations”
- Format constraint: “Return only the function body, no wrapper”
The through-line is specificity. Every vague word in your prompt is a decision you’re delegating to the model, and models make the safest-looking choice rather than the right one for your context.
